How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent?

Once a year for most homes. Here's why, and the signs that yours can't wait.

The short answer: once a year for most households. Busy homes, long vent runs and rooftop vents can need it more often. The longer answer is about why.

Why dryer vents matter

Your lint screen catches most of the lint, but not all of it. The rest travels into the vent duct and settles, especially at elbows and in long runs. As the duct narrows, the dryer runs hotter and longer, and lint is very flammable.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, about 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year, and failure to clean is the leading cause, at 34% of those fires. Dryer fires peak in fall and winter, with January the highest month.

Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning

  • Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
  • The dryer or laundry room gets hot
  • A burning smell when the dryer runs
  • Lint around the outside vent hood
  • The exterior flap barely opens, or birds are nesting in it

What makes some homes need it more often

In Woburn, Stoneham and other towns with many condos and townhouses, dryer vents often run a long way to the roof or a side wall. Long runs and rooftop exits collect lint faster and are hard to clean yourself. Large families and homes that run several loads a day also build up lint faster.

What a professional cleaning includes

At HQ Vent we measure airflow at the outside hood first, clean the full length of the vent with a rotary brush system, check the transition duct behind the dryer, clear the exterior hood, and measure airflow again. You see the before and after numbers.

Quick tips between cleanings

  • Clean the lint screen before every load
  • Replace plastic or thin foil transition ducts with semi-rigid metal
  • Don't run the dryer when you leave the house or go to sleep
  • Check that the outside flap opens when the dryer runs
