We clean air ducts for a living, so you might expect us to say everyone needs it. We don't. Here's an honest look at when duct cleaning is worth it, based on guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
When duct cleaning makes sense
The EPA suggests considering duct cleaning when:
- There is substantial visible mold inside hard-surface ducts or other parts of the system
- Ducts are infested with rodents or insects
- Ducts are clogged with excessive dust or debris, or particles blow out of the supply registers
In our experience, that most often happens after a renovation, in a home you just bought, or in a home that has never had the ducts cleaned.
What duct cleaning won't do
The EPA notes that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems, and a light layer of dust in ducts is not considered a health risk. Be careful with any company that promises health benefits.
Red flags when choosing a company
- Very low coupon prices that rise once the crew arrives
- Claims of EPA certification (the EPA does not certify duct cleaners)
- Pushing chemical treatments without showing you a reason
- No before and after photos
What a proper cleaning looks like
A proper job uses source removal: the system is put under negative pressure with a HEPA-filtered machine or a vacuum that exhausts outside, then every supply and return run is brushed. The company should protect your floors, seal any access holes it makes, and show you before and after photos.
Our approach
We look first. If your ducts don't need cleaning, we'll tell you and show you why. If they do, you get a written price and photos of the result.
